Lady in a Vase

Lady in a Vase Series – created 2025

The Lady in a Vase series grew from my fascination with the way women embody both strength and delicacy, rootedness and growth. Each figure rises like a living vessel, carrying blossoms, beads, or butterflies — symbols of transformation, beauty, and resilience. Their faces, serene yet vibrant, merge with color, texture, and adornment to suggest a harmony between the human spirit and the natural world.

These works are not portraits in the traditional sense, but imaginative expressions of inner life. The vase becomes both a grounding form and a celebration of individuality, while the vivid palettes and layered materials invite viewers to see beyond surface appearance — into joy, vitality, and quiet strength.

Together, the series is a meditation on how we carry beauty within us, how we bloom in unexpected ways, and how transformation — like a butterfly taking flight — is always possible.

Featured Works - The Painted Ladies

These three French Ladies are painted not just in color, but in feeling—layered with thick texture, shimmering metallics, and sculptural strokes that lift them from the canvas into living memory. Their garments are composed of gilded paint, palette-knife flourishes, and textured surfaces that evoke both haute couture and ancient tapestries. Each closed eye suggests a world within—a silent reverie of Parisian elegance, resilience, and untold stories. Flowers bloom beside them like thoughts, their presence tender yet eternal. These are not portraits of people, but of presence itself—feminine, enduring, and defiantly luminous.

Experience

Rosalie Marsh-Boinus, long-time Laguna Beach artist has been featured at the Sawdust Art Festival since 2006. Her inspiration comes from fusing post French Impressionism, German Expressionism and Surrealist Abstraction into what she calls “Modern Expressionism,” Rosalie paintings feature female-centric subjects reminiscent of a bygone era. Creating her own unique realm, she invites viewers into a kaleidoscopic world where female figures reveal powerful, expressions, resonating with a distinctive, dreamlike aura. Mysteriously reverberating with intuitive and psychological inner emotions of the soul, her female-centric oeuvre captures the essence of the female spirit.

Fusing nineteenth century precision, she is influenced by sophisticated women of the past. Artistically creating a dialogue between traditional forms and contemporary expression, Rosalie cajoles us to question “who” are these women and what is their personal story. By creating visual stories of close-up, stylized, fashionable women who wear chic chapeaux, she integrates patterns and textures from her imagination.

She loves using found objects, crushed leaves, sticks, jewelry and material to enhance her paintings.

Her latest series of Four French Ladies were featured at a January 2025 exhibit at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery In New York City. She is continually inspired by the world, nature and history.

Her latest series of “Lady in a Vase” paintings have us thinking about how nature and the female intertwine. But nature has a way of destroying that beauty, i.e., the fires in Los Angeles early this year.

Rosalie has also been a volunteer at Sherman Gardens for the past several years and is inspired by the beautiful gardens.

What Collectors are saying...

"Blue Lady"
• This is a nice homage to Matisse's girl with the green eyes; i like
the color scheme you have: blue period Picasso; and then there's the Edvard Munch influence as well; the color captures her mood which is not exactly morose but is at least distant and despairing - as with the other image, the forms are simplified, as if you're expressing something general and universal. • the eyes are the most expressive of all; is she in mid-blink? is she glowering? as with the prior image, we don't know what's in or on her mind and thus it makes us want to keep looking. her eyes also are not a little intimidating.
• the swirls of the dress and hat match the curves of her hair: you have a
good sense of composition;
• a good sense of space, too: you've got her crammed into the front of
the picture plane so our attention is focused entirely on her face, which is One Big Enigma.
• the picture looks like something out a dream; everything is vague
and indeterminate.
General
• i think you have a very keen sense of color and composition. i think your
theme, from what i can gather from two images, is how little we know of life and of ourselves. i think your take on this theme is we can be stylish and well off (like the woman) or hip and determined (like the survivors).
• these are impressions taken from images. i can only imagine what they look like in person.
